About JMD Foto

Self Portrait (2020)

Hello Friends! I’m Jason, nice to meet you! I started taking photography seriously at the age of 21. Having just moved back to my hometown after some youthful travel, I settled in working at a local camera store developing film and selling cameras on the sales floor. Given the opportunity to try out the new models of cameras that came into the store, I soon started forging a love with photography that still has a hold of me today.

Someone asked me once to define my style. What a loaded question! After some deep thought, I came up with a few facts that I can admit to. First, I am inherently in love with black and white photography. There, I said it! It’s not that I am afraid to shoot in full color, I am not. But for me, black and white brings out a contrast in images that cannot be ignored. It highlights stunning details that may be lost in the subtle hues and tones of the colorful world we live in. You cannot hide from black and white. It truly exposes all.

Secondly, I am, and always have been in love with all people. My perfect fantasy of retirement is to sit on a park bench, feeding the birds, and watching the spectacle of life unfold before me. There truly is nothing more beautiful than watching the human race be authentic as they meander through this spinning blue rock. That is what led to my love of street photography. Capturing real life, as it happens. It’s a beautiful momento to the generations to come of the real lives and stories that predated them, that helped to shape and mold them.

Third, I am a nerd. I always have been. I devoured fiction from a young age, and loved the people who had the imagination to create it. After seeing the photography work of Scott Mutter, I fell in love with the idea of creating surreal pieces through the medium of photography. You can see a little bit of how my brain works in the Editorial portfolio right here.

Finally, I have always been a bit of a rebel in my heart. I love to fight the conventional. You can see hints of this in my high fashion and boudoir pieces. The idea of finding beauty coming from unconventional body types, poses, and situations has always been a goal of mine. The further away from the norm, the more I am inclined to document it through my lens. And that is what I want to bring to you. It is my hope that through my photography, you can see a side of yourself that will break through all of the walls you have put up, the shields in place, the barriers you have formed. You will finally see that beautiful self hidden away. That piece of personal history to be remembered by.
